Sanitas-acuril is a website devoted to health information in the Caribbean. It is a project of the Association of Caribbean University, Research and Institutional Libraries (ACURIL), Sanitas-acuril was launched in 2003, during ACURIL’s XXXIII Annual Conference, held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. News is a coordinator moderated section within Sanitas-acuril for disseminating news on health-related events in the region.
Sanitas was developed in a multi-lingual environment and represents the cultural diversity of the Caribbean. Its purpose is to identify websites devoted to health issues in each country in the region. Among the initial selection of web pages are: medical libraries, databases with local publications not represented in other sources, academic health institutions, government health institutions, law and legislation, and bona fide members of the health sector of each country (including non profit organizations and health services providers).
For the English language materials, the main topics in the hierarchical structure of the directory correspond to the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) MeSH (Medical Subject Headings). For Spanish language materials, BIREME’s Descriptores en Ciencias de la Salud [DeCS] provides official MeSH translations. BIREME is currently working on official MeSH translations for French language materials, which soon will be available.
